| Great pitching and good defense help LVLL s 9 Select to beat West Long Beach 4-3 on Monday to win the District 38 championship. The 9s didnt waste any time. They pushed across 3 in the top of the 1st. Singles by Ewan Scott and Luke Jones and a sacrifice by Jake Watry put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 out. Jones scored on error on a ball hit by Tyler Vargas. Vargas then stole 2nd. Ryan Harvey came up and lined a sharp single to left to score Scott and Vargas. Jones escaped a bases loaded 1 out jam in the bottom of the 1st when Ryan Harvey turned a unassisted double play to get us out of the inning. The scored remained 3-0 Village until top of the 4th when Harvey walked and scored on a towering double by Cade Claridy to give the 9s a 4-0 lead. Meanwhile Jones was pitching another great game. In 5 innings pitched he gave up only 1 run 2 hits and struck out 5. Leading 4-1 in the bottom of the 6th Tyler Vargas fighting a battle of nerves came to relieve Jones. WLB scored 2 runs and had the tying run on 2nd with 1 out. Thats as far as WLB got as Vargas bore down and struck out the next 2 WLB batters to give the 9s the game and District title. Congrats 9!!!! |
| Despite another great pitching performance by Ryan Angermund LVLL s 9 Select lost to West Long Beach on Saturday 4-2. Angermund threw 4 strong innings but was the victim of some shoddy Village defense in the 2nd where he gave up 3 unearned runs. Down 3-0 in the 3rd Sam Turley led off with a 1b stole 2nd and scored on a 1B by Ryan Angermund. In the 5th Brandon Hipp tripled with 2 out and scored on another single by Angermund to cut the lead to 3-2. Luke Jones came on in the 5th and gave up yet another unearned run to make score 4-2. But Village wouldnt quit. Leadoff singles by Luke Jones and Jake Watry gave the 9s 2 on and nobody out in the top of the 6th. The next batter was Ryan Harvey who laid down a great bunt and initially Jones was safe at 3rd. But after some discussion the call was changed because the 3rd base umpire did not realize a force play was in effect. The call seemed to take the wind out of the boys and the boys were unable to push the tying runs across. Thechampionship game is Monday against West Long Beach at 530. Please come down to LVLL and cheer the 9s on to a win. |
