FARM TOC @ LVLL UPDATES
The Mariners thought their season was over, but due to a last minute opportunity, they were able to slide into TOC as the #3 seed. The defense was on but the bats came out cold in their opening game vs. Long Beach 1 Padres, losing 5-7. This loss put the Mariners into the loser bracket of the double elimination tournament. The bats came alive in game 2 vs. Long Beach 4 White Sox, as the Mariners mercied them in 4th inning 16-1. The Mariners then went on to mercy the Plaza 1 Red Sox 31-1 in the 4th inning to win game 3. Then beat the Greater Bellflower Orioles in game 4: 15-5, and then two days later mercied the Long Beach 3 Angels 17-2.
All of this work led to a showdown with fellow Lakewood Village rival Diamondbacks. This was the game of the tournament as both teams battled late into the game with the Mariners pulling it out 14-12 and sending the Mariners into the Finals against the Long Beach 2 Red Sox.
Coming into Tuesdays Championship game, the Mariners had to win to play the "if necessary game" to win the championship. The bats were hot and defense continued to be stellar, as the Mariners beat the LB Red Sox 21-2, and then came back Thursday to repeat the performance, playing the LB Red Sox to a mercy rule victory in the 5th inning 16-1 to win the game and win the title.
Led by an amazing defense, good hitting, aggressive base-running, and a never say die attitude, the Mariners came from thinking their season was done and over a month ago, only to find second life and rally to take the championship.
In all, the Mariners played the most games possible in the tournament. In 8 games the Mariners allowed 31 but scored 135 runs; having 4 mercy rule victories.
FARM MARINERS - Harry Nelms, Fabian Barales-Nunez, Emmanuel Morales, Aaron Kaono, Brayden Garner, Connor Espinoza, Carter Johnson, Brandon O'Shia, Trystan Scott, Harrison Lennertz. Manager - Bill Garner, Coaches - Matt Nelms, Russ Wilkie, Byron Barales, Casey Scott and a ton of parents who pitched in different ways running stations at practices, carting the team to the cages and a number of other duties.
Way to go Mariners!!--Bill Garner
MINOR A TOC @ STEARNS PARK
The Yankees won an exciting game 6-5 against the LB Wildcats. Strong pitching by Brian Kossler and Luke Jones recorded 10 K's and only yielded 3 hits. Great backstop work, fielding, including two diving plays by Ricky Coffman, superb base running and 7 solid "timely" hits by Luke Jones, William Bui, Ryan Harvey, Nolan Brown, Ricky Coffman and Brian Kossler did the trick. Special thanks for all the LVLL fans from the other teams and their support. Truly great sportsmanship as the game ended at 1000 PM. -- Joe Kossler
LVLL Minor A Padres had a dominating performance over the Lakewood Angels with a score of 24 to 4. The Murphy brothers pitched a solid game giving up only 4 runs with the help of their defense. Ty Miller and Arturo Solano had their best hitting game of the season, just shy of perfect. Great job Padres! -- Lori Miller
The Yankees beat Hawaiian Gardens 17-5. The game started out 15-0. The "snake oil" rubbed on the bats accounted for 21 hits and 6 homeruns. Nolan Brown led the charge and had two inside the park homeruns / 4 total hits, Ricky Coffman 4 hits, Brian Kossler 3 hits, Luke Jones 3 hits - Ryan Harvey, Brett Jernigan, Joshua Allen and Bill Bui each had 2. Especially gratifying was that Josh Allen, Ryan Harvey and Brett Jernigan all hit inside the park home runs. Special thanks to all the LVLL fans that supported (even those at the LA Angels game). I would estimate that there was over 70 fans on our side (looked like a home game). We play for the Championship Monday night at 7:30. -- Joe Kossler
The Yankees lost a "super" exciting nail bitter of a game to Long Beach 7-5. The Yankees jumped out to a 3-1 lead and then it was 4-2 going into the 5th. Strong hitting by Ricky Coffman, Luke Jones, Ryan Harvey and William Bui paced the (8) hit attack. Pitching was led by Brian Kossler with (4) innings pitched, (2) unearned runs, (2) hits (same hitter), (4) BB's and (6)K's. In the 5th inning, we gave up (5) runs on miscues that gave LB a 7-4 lead. As always, the Team started a comeback. No quit in our boys. Coffman led off the bottom of the 6th with a double, Bui a triple and then a walk. With no outs and runners on second and third we were unable to get the necessary runs to tie or win the game. Courageous effort by the boys. We play for the Championship Wednesday at Stearns 7:30. Once again, I cannot thank all of the Village fans that supported these boys again!! Hats off to you. Congrats to the Blue Jays for winning the District Tournament.-- Joe Kossler
THE YANKEES WIN!! THE YANKEES WIN!! What a sensational game. LVLL should be proud of these tough 9-10 year old boys. Ricky Coffman shut them down in the first inning and pitched 4 strong innings giving up (2) runs, (3) hits, (5) K's, (3) BB'S. Brian Kossler led the hitting attack with (2) triples and a double. The Yankees were up 2-0 until the third inning when LB tied it up. In the fifth inning, the Wildcats score (6) runs to make it 8-2. The bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth as Luke Jones, Ryan Harvey, Joshua Allen, William Bui, Ricky Coffman and Brian Kossler all got hits and made the score 8-7. Luke Jones pitching and solid defense in the sixth shut down LB. Brett Jernigan led off the bottom of the sixth with a double. Brian Kossler hit a triple down the left field line tying the game at 8-8. Ryan Harvey hit a sharp shot to first base and the winning run scored. A special "Thank You" to the Yankee Fans, Parents and Coaches. Also, to Danielle Coffman for taking care of the Team all year. Once again, this never would have happened without the support of the LVLL fans who made it a home game again.-- Joe Kossler
MAJOR ALL DISTRICT UPDATES
our LV Giants lost to West Bellflower, 8 - 10. It was a really exciting game, we just had one bad inning, then came on strong the top of the 6th inning. K.C. was on fire with a triple and a double -- Kelly Navarro
The Angels, in a losing effort 14-2 had some heat throwin at them, the Sterns pitcher was throwing over 70mph. Jake Elzinga had a triple and a single and Ian Konek had a single for the only three hits in a losing effort. Aaron Rutz pitched 3 great innings. During his at bat got hit in the face by that 70 mph pitcher. Ump asked for a pinch runner and while Aaron was still on the ground he replied "I dont want to come out of the game". The ump said, "if you sit out right now and put some ice on your face, I will consider letting you come back out and pitch". He agreed and came out in the next inning and finished the game. --Craig Elzinga
The Major Giants won Monday night against Long Beach 17 - 10. Great pitching by Matthew Moorehead and Justen Lowrey. Solid hitting by the entire team lead by Kris Melvin who hit two triples. They will face our LV Angels tonight at 5:30 at Rynerson Park.-- Kelly Navarro
The Angels erupted with 21 runs in a 21 to 3 win over the LVLL Giants tonight. The Angels were lead by, Alcorn, Elzinga, Konek, Garvey, and Knight all having three hits each. Ian Konek homered twice and Taylor Garvey homered once in the Angels win. Overall the Angels pounded out over twenty hits. The Angels play again Saturday, 2:00pm @ Rynerson Park..--Craig Elzinga
6-12-10: Well the Angels did it again, they mercied the Bellflower Tigers 13-1 behind the hitting of Jake Elzinga hitting his first two run home run. Jake also added a single, Kyle Alcorn hit his first three run home run and Ian Konek hit his third and fourth home runs of the tournament. Jake and Ian also combined to pitch a three hit game. Matthew Bilodeau also chipped in for two hits, next up for the Angels is Monday night, 6/14, 5:30, @ Rynerson come out and support your Angels.--Craig Elzinga
6-14-10: The Angels stay hot with an 8 to 4 win over Bellflower #2. Ian Konek pitched a great game and Kyle Alcorn and Jake Elzinga closed it out for the Angels. The Angels had ten hits, lead by Ian with two hits and three RBI's, six other Angels added hits for an overall great team effort. The Angels play Wednesday night vs Long Beach Steans #3 team @ 5:30, with only three teams left in the Tournament a win Wednesday night gets us to the finals. The Angel's want to thank all our fans for the tremendous support, see you Wednesday.
6-16-10: The Angels run came to an end last night, we got up early on Long Beach 1 to nothing and held the lead until the 5th inning where we had a couple of walks and four untimely errors and Long Beach scored 4 runs. In the six the Angels came back and scored two runs to make it 4-3, we loaded the bases with two outs and Kyle hit a shot to deep short, the short stop made a diving grab, fumbled it and from his knees threw to second for a bang bang play that the umpire called us out. The season was over. Kyle Alcorn pitched a great game, Jake Elzinga came in to clean up in the fifth. Six of our boys had base hits in a valiant effort. Thank you LVLL fans for showing up and routing us on. Lights out.--Craig Elzinga
MAJOR TOC @ LVLL UPDATES
6-12-10: The Majors Dodgers shut out the Plaza Mariners 9-0 behind the strong pitching of Mondesi Blanchard and Nate Polar, who struck out a total of 15, and allowed one hit and a hit by pitch. The Dodgers squandered several early opportunities to score but finally broke through in the final two innings with the aid of gutsy baserunning by Mondesi, Josh Fischer, and Nick Munoz. Mondesi had a hit, Nate had three hits, Josh added two more, Matthew Fields had three hits, Jason Bryan had two hits, and Justin Boyd and Tiger Jablonski chipped in with one apiece. The Dodgers will next play on Saturday, June 19th at 5 pm at LVLL in the winner's bracket final against the Long Beach LL Padres. -- John Blanchard
6-19-10: A picture perfect late spring day at beautiful LVLL was the setting for a classic game between the Long Beach Little League Major Padres and the LVLL Major Dodgers. Emotions ran high and the play was tight in a game that "we've all been waiting for." From the first batter, it was clear that the Dodgers were not intimidated by the hard-throwing LB righthander, as they scored a run on three hits in the first inning. LB scored three in their half of the first with the help of three Mondesi Blanchard walks and a crucial throwing error. Mondesi settled down after that and set down the next 12 out of 13 Padres, striking out 10 of them. Meanwhile the Dodgers continued to hit away, scoring 1 in the 2nd inning, 3 in the 3rd, and Josh Fischer clouted a colossal jack deep to left center to make the score 6-3, Dodgers. And then, the sixth inning came, and some wackiness ensued. The first batter reached on catcher's interference of all things, and Mondesi retired LB's big slugger for the first out. Nate Polar entered, gave up a single and the next batter crushed one to deep left center... and it bounced off the TOP of the fence and back in the field. This was followed by a walk, a pop out, and with runners on 2nd and 3rd, the Padres flared a single to right field for the win. This was quite an intense game, and the Dodgers are far from defeated--they are itching to play again, and they will get the chance Monday June 21st versus the Plaza Mariners at 5pm. -- John Blanchard
6-21-10: The summer solstice was today and the Dodgers game was a hot one. After the letdown against Long Beach, the boys probably took the Plaza Mariners too lightly and they nearly paid dearly. Justin Boyd, an 11-year-old, pitched valiantly into the fifth inning, keeping the Dodgers in the game, but the defense had a few lapses behind him and permitted Plaza a couple more runs than they should have had. Meanwhile, the Dodgers offense spun its wheels quite a bit and failed to capitalize on the three runs they scored in the first inning, and fell prey to a pop up double play where Tiger Jablonski was thrown out at home in the third and a line drive double play where Matthew Fields was caught off of first in the fourth.
Still, when Mondesi Blanchard hit a two-run bomb in the fourth inning to give the Dodgers a 6-3 lead, it looked like the Dodgers would escape. However, it turned out Plaza was non-plussed and took full advantage of an error in the top of the fifth inning and hit a game-tying three run home run, and later in the inning pushed across two go ahead runs (although another run was prevented when the Dodgers executed a perfect double steal defense and Mondesi threw out a runner at home).
So, in the sixth, the Dodgers trailed by two, and Nate Polar singled and Tiger scored him with a hard hit ball to the right side which found its way to the wall. Then, on the next play, Tiger was called out at home for not sliding on a ball hit by Josh Fischer. Nick Munoz followed with a bunt single, but the Dodgers had another run cut down at the plate when Matthew bunted too hard to the pitcher and Josh was caught off base. So, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Jose Hernandez stepped to the plate, down by one run. And, Jose came through, lashing a double to the right center wall to give the Dodgers a slim one run lead. Nate Polar, who took the tough loss on Saturday, came on to close it out, and danced around a couple of errors and a bases loaded jam, to earn the save. Dodgers 9, Plaza Mariners 8. Next up will be a rematch against the Long Beach Padres Wednesday at 5pm.-- John Blanchard
6-23-10 ...let's play 2! The Majors Dodgers came up huge today in an elimination game of the Tournament of Champions and beat the Long Beach Padres 2-0, behind a seven strikeout three hitter from Matthew Fields, and sparkling defense from the entire Dodger team, particularly a diving catch from centerfielder Justin Boyd. Mondesi Blanchard had two doubles and scored both runs and hustlin' David Rivera (the good doctor) had three hits and moved Mondesi around for both runs. The Dodgers and Padres will saddle up again on Friday June 25th at 5pm at Lakewood Village for the championship game, a likely pitching rematch from last Saturday's thriller. -- John Blanchard
6-25-10: And the Dodgers make four! The Majors Dodgers beat the Long Beach Padres 5-1 to secure Lakewood Village's fourth team championship of the year. Before a spirited group of fans, the Dodgers were inspired to greatness this night. Matthew Fields hit two home runs and Mondesi Blanchard threw a no-hitter to lead the Dodgers to the crown. Tiger Jablonski made several good plays at first place and David Rivera turned a tough bouncer into an out in the fourth inning that ultimately won the day for the Dodgers. It should be noted that the Padres were extremely classy in defeat and this is commendable. They were worthy foes and gave the Dodgers a run for their money. The Dodgers organization would also like to thank the entire Lakewood Village team for their unwavering support this fine year--we truly have a superlative league. -- John Blanchard
